Simultaneous Measurement of On-Road Vehicle Emissions and Traffic Flow Using Remote Sensing and an Area-Wide Detector

چکیده
The goal of this project, sponsored by the Transportation Research Board and conducted jointly by NC State University, the National Institute for Statistical Sciences, and the Division of Air Quality of the NC Dept. of Environmental and Natural Resources, is to demonstrate a methodology for development of empirical emissions models based upon observable traffic variables. On-road emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) were measured at two sites in the Research Triangle Park area using a remote sensing device (RSD). Individual vehicle speed, acceleration and license numbers were also collected using the RSD. Traffic parameters for individual vehicles (e.g., speed, headway, vehicle type) were simultaneously measured using a video-based area-wide traffic detection system known as Mobilizer. For approximately 7,000 light duty vehicles, valid measurements from both the RSD and Mobilizer were obtained. License plate data were used to obtain vehicle registration data, which assists in more detailed classification of vehicle type as well as other useful data such as vehicle model years. Vehicles were also classified as to whether they were in a platoon and, if so, their position in the platoon. This paper focuses on the deployment of the RSD and Mobilizer, an overview of the methodology for developing a combined data set, and preliminary results from field measurements at one site.

Characterization of near-road pollutant gradients using path-integrated optical remote sensing.
Understanding motor vehicle emissions, near-roadway pollutant dispersion, and their potential impact to near-roadway populations is an area of growing environmental interest. As part of ongoing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research in this area, a field study was conducted near Interstate 440 (I-440) in Raleigh, NC, in July and August of 2006. This paper presents a subset of measurement...
متن کاملTraffic Classification and Speed Estimation in Time Series of Airborne Optical Remote Sensing Images
In this paper we propose a new two level traffic parameter estimation approach based on traffic classification into three classes: free flow, congested and stopped traffic in image time series of airborne optical remote sensing data. The proposed method is based on the combination of various techniques: change detection in two images, image processing such as binarization and filtering and inco...
متن کاملEstimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city
Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...
متن کاملQueueing in Traffic Flows
This project studies the effects of vehicle routing on pollution levels. We aim to develop queueing theory based mathematical models to analyse highway traffic flows and focus on focus on the capacity drop and shockwaves. Then we intend to use emission models and plume model to predict air pollution in a wider region. These predictions will be tested using remote sensing data and data from meas...
